It felt like Spring, the mood when I landed in Atlanta to capture Anand-Ramya’s big day. I had shot their pre-wedding moments earlier in Las Vegas, so it was an amicable breeze of memories that kept me company en route to the venue. There were many good moments to reminisce from that Vegas shoot, my favorite being the way they opted for offbeat locations that reflected the spirit of the city rather than the glam & glitz that most of us would relate with Vegas. They were this super cool couple who were so confident about each other that they didn’t fuss much about the poses or the preparations. To them, all it meant was to hold hands and stand next to each other. They loved to keep it calm and simple. I loved that. By then, I knew that Anand loved to be called Andy (and sported a cool and caring attitude). I knew that Ramya always smiled from her heart (and exhibited an unexplainable positive vibe in it). So yes, with this strongly connected sense of understanding I was looking forward to their wedding as a friend and a photographer.
The excitement was brimming at Ritz Carlton, the venue that had the arrangements in full swing. It was a destination wedding and the mood was naturally high since everyone would fly in with a light heart. There would be no meetings to attend or trains to catch; just the splendid feeling of celebrating an occasion. As much as a destination wedding sounds exotic, it is equally challenging to make one happen. I’ll tell you why. A new destination is like a new planet altogether. Coming from outside, one has to master all the factors like the place’s weather patterns, the venue, food, logistics and more. There will be surprises like the way weather played hide and seek at the last minute here in Atlanta. After all the preparations, they had to move the gala indoors. No, the disappointment wasn’t given a chance to peek in as the entire family came together to pull the strings in style. We are often at our best under the most under challenging times, isn’t it? There’s a charm to it.
The stage was set and the celebrations began. It was a lovely bunch of people who had come from far to bless the couple. The rituals followed colorfully. As much as love, there was fun in the air as the friends and family kept reminding how happy they were to be there, in their gestures and dance moves. I was gifted with a lot of love and space to work with, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. There was both the calm and the chaos, the tunes and the tradition. More like Anand and Ramya who were this silent yet stirring personalities, the entire event was an entire mix of elated emotions.
Of everything, I couldn’t help but admire the resilient nature of Ramya’s Mother in many occasions. She had lost her husband and Ramya was young back then. As a single strong soul, as a Mother who brought her daughter up against all the odds, her journey stood reflected in the tears she had when talking about HIM. She talked about how happy Ramya’s Father would’ve been to see all of this; to see his daughter grow up from a little kid to a compassionate girl to a successful Doctor to an understanding woman today. All through the event, there were many speeches that filled the space with his presence. Maybe that explained the positive vibe in Ramya’s smile; one she’d have inherited from the blessings of her Father. She knew he was always by her side. He certainly was present more than anyone there, in the smiles and tears of everyone.
Somehow that day, everything and everyone seemed to converge onto this point of realization – how soulful companionship is! I felt it, everyone felt it. Anand & Ramya – looking at the way they smile into each other’s eyes, one can say for sure that these two are going to be just fine.
Personally, their friendship will remain a very close memory to me. Thank you for making me realize all of this and more. Cheers to a happy married life ahead!
